The Pera Rocha pear (Pyrus communis L) is one of the most popular pears here in Portugal. It is a predominantly small pear with a generally yellow skin, covered with brown patches and spots. Ideal for eating, it is not too firm, juicy, and sweet. It tastes good at room temperature, but also as a refreshing snack from the refrigerator, where it should be stored.
The cultivation of this special pear was first described in Portugal in 1836. Grown above Lisbon, from Sintra to Leiria, the pear derives its distinctive aroma from the many hours of sunshine and the influence of the nearby Atlantic. This special microclimate produces a unique pear.
