Portugal's apple diversity: Discover hidden treasures

Apfel Woche

From juice to strudel: Rediscover Portugal's apples

As autumn arrives and the days grow shorter, many look forward to the scent of fresh apples, warm strudel, and hot tea. But this Apple Week, we'd like to take you on a very special journey of discovery – to Portugal , where apples thrive in a unique way thanks to the sun, wind, and Atlantic air. These varieties are hardly known in our part of the world – and that's precisely what makes them so fascinating.

Discover Portuguese apple culture with us – aromatic, versatile, surprising. From traditional varieties and hand-pressed juice to exceptional gourmet products, we'll show you that apples are more than just sweet.

Reineta Parda – the queen of old varieties

Let's begin with what is probably the most famous Portuguese apple variety: Reineta Parda . Even the name evokes tradition and history – and indeed, this variety is one of the oldest cultivated apples in Portugal. Its appearance is unassuming: slightly rough, often with a brownish-golden skin. But anyone who bites into it experiences a small sensation.

The flavor is intense, balanced between sweetness and a delicate acidity, with a slightly nutty note. Reineta Parda is wonderful for baking, roasting, or as an accompaniment to strong cheese and red wine. In Portugal, it is often baked in the oven, lightly caramelized, and served with cinnamon – a simple yet incomparable dessert.

We now offer the Reineta Parda fresh – directly from Portugal. A variety you have to try to understand why it's considered an "apple with character" there.

Wild apples Esmolfe – small, rare and full of aroma

A true insider tip among gourmets is the Esmolfe apple – or, as it is affectionately called in Portugal: Maçã Bravo de Esmolfe . This variety originally grows in the north of the country, around the village of Esmolfe, and is a natural wonder.

The small, pale yellow fruits release an intense, almost floral aroma as soon as they are cut. They are tender, juicy, and surprisingly complex in flavor. No wonder the Esmolfe apple has a protected designation of origin in Portugal.

This variety is virtually unknown in Germany – all the more reason to be delighted that you can try it exclusively during our Apple Week. Enjoy it on its own, with yogurt, or in a delicious fruit salad – the difference compared to our local varieties is astonishing.

Naturally cloudy apple juice – pure taste, without compromise

For everyone who loves the pure taste of apples, we have something special: our naturally cloudy apple juice . It is freshly pressed in Portugal, not from concentrate, and contains only sun-ripened fruit.

The result: a juice that tastes like biting into an apple itself – robust, slightly tart, and unadulterated. Completely free of additives or sugar. Perfect for breakfast, after sports, or as a refreshing base for autumnal cocktails.

Apple Strudel Chocolate Crispy Clusters – Tradition meets crunchy delight

Anyone who loves apple strudel will find this new interpretation hard to resist: Apple Strudel Chocolate Crispy Cluster combines the best of both worlds – the warm, sweet taste of classic apple strudel with fine chocolate pieces and crispy crunch.

A moment of pure enjoyment that evokes memories and surprises at the same time. Ideal with coffee or as a small snack.

Apple-lemon fruit tea blend – sunny, fresh, invigorating

When the leaves fall outside, our apple and lemon tea lifts your spirits. The combination of fruity apple and tangy lemon is reminiscent of a Portuguese autumn morning – light, crisp, and warming all at once.

Whether hot on cold days or as iced tea on a sunny afternoon: This tea blend brings the best of both worlds to your cup.

Apple cider vinegar from Oliveira da Serra & Gallo – liquid gold from Portugal

Vinegar is far more than just an ingredient in Portuguese cuisine – it's a defining characteristic. The apple vinegars from Oliveira da Serra and Gallo impressively demonstrate why.

Both brands stand for the highest quality and decades of experience. The vinegar is made from carefully fermented apples, gently matured, and possesses a harmonious balance of freshness and depth. Ideal for salads, marinades, or for refining sauces.

Why not try it over fresh goat cheese or with a touch of honey over roasted vegetables – a moment of pure enjoyment that will surprise you.

Apple and chestnut fruit spread – autumn in a jar

Hardly anything is more fitting for this time of year than apple and chestnut fruit spread . This special combination unites the mild sweetness of ripe apples with the creamy, nutty flavor of chestnuts.

Perfect on fresh bread, with pancakes, or as a delicate accompaniment to cheese. The taste evokes golden autumn days and walks under chestnut trees. A glass of pure Portugal.

Dried apple rings – the natural sweetness

Crispy, light and 100% natural – our dried apple rings are the ideal snack. Gently dried, they retain their full aroma and typical apple scent.

They're not only delicious, but also healthy – rich in fiber, with no added sugar or preservatives. Whether at the office, while traveling, or as a sweet evening snack – there's hardly a better way to enjoy autumn.
