Chayote, summer squash / Chu-chu, Kg
Chayote, summer squash / Chu-chu, Kg is backordered and will ship as soon as it is back in stock.
This water-rich fruit has hardly any calories, but is full of vitamins, potassium, calcium and iron. It is one of the most versatile vegetables there is. Definitely try it raw, it's reminiscent of kohlrabi - really tasty. Whether raw or processed, chayote offers a variety of ways to enjoy it. Why not try the classic “tomato-cucumber salad” instead of the cucumber, swapping it with the Chu-Chu.
It is called "Buddha's fist" in China because the fruit resembles praying hands.
The exotic chayote is considered a pumpkin plant and is related to the cucumber, but also to the zucchini and the pumpkin. The chayote is a green-yellow-white, pear-shaped fruit,
which has irregular longitudinal grooves. It is up to 20 cm long and has a soft to hard core. The flesh is firm and white or greenish. The chayote is also called summer squash or here in Portugal chu-chu. You cook or process the fruit unpeeled, but you can also peel it.
Chu-Chu is pronounced like a sh. So: Shu-Shoo.
