The Pera Rocha pear (Pyrus communis L) is one of the most popular pears here in Portugal. It is a predominantly small pear with a basic yellow color in the shell, covered with brown areas and dots. Ideal for eating, it is not too firm, juicy and sweet. It tastes good at room temperature, but also as a refreshing snack from the fridge, where it should be stored.
The cultivation of this special pear was first described in Portugal in 1836. The pear, which is grown above Lisbon from Sintra to Leiria, gets its special aroma from the many hours of sunshine and the influence of the nearby Atlantic. A special pear grows through this special microclimate.
