It thrives in the very changeable South Pacific climate on the island of Tasmania and in South Australia and is characterized by its diverse flavor.
Initially sweet and fruity, this peppery berry is followed by a distinct, peppery heat. A subtle hint of tree mushroom and an earthy, slightly clove-like flavor define its appeal. This exotic pepper variety smells and tastes like no other.
The Tasmanian mountain pepper is a spherical, pea-sized, smooth, berry-like fruit, glossy, dark red at first, then turning black as it ripens. The Tasmanian mountain pepper is not actually a pepper, but rather the purple-colored, dried berry of a wild bush.
Long used as a medicinal plant, it was then discovered as a spice in the 19th century. It's not suitable for grinding in a spice mill, as it would clog. Instead, crush the seeds in a mortar and pestle and season just before serving.
