The chayote, also known as chu-chu or Buddha's fist, is an exceptional fruit packed with valuable nutrients. Despite its high water content and low calorie content, it still provides plenty of vitamins, potassium, calcium, and iron. Particularly versatile in the kitchen, the chayote can be enjoyed raw, boiled, or fried.
Raw, their flavor is reminiscent of fresh kohlrabi—a crunchy, healthy addition to salads or as a refreshing snack. Tip: Replace cucumbers in a classic tomato and cucumber salad with chayote for a surprising new flavor!
A member of the squash family, the pear-shaped chayote is related to cucumbers, zucchini, and squash. Its green-yellow to white skin is often longitudinally grooved, and the interior is firm and juicy. Its soft to hard core is also edible. The fruit is traditionally eaten unpeeled, but for a more delicate mouthfeel, it can easily be peeled.
Known in China as Buddha's fist, the chayote owes its name to its distinctive shape, reminiscent of praying hands. Discover the versatile preparation options of this exotic fruit and bring new flavors to your kitchen!
Chu-Chu is pronounced like a "sh." So: Schu-Schu.
