Somewhere in the middle of nowhere, (N 38 36' 6" W 28 1' 9") on the way from Portugal to America, in the middle of the North Atlantic is the biosphere reserve. There you can find it, the Azores island of São Jorge. The tuna from Santa Catarina is still traditionally caught with a fishing rod using the “Salto e Vara” method. This is a very ecological fishing method to protect against overfishing and for sustainability as it prevents bycatch.

The trade in tuna is also controversial here. We have nevertheless decided to support the efforts of Azores fishermen to traditionally catch and process tuna by hand. Since 2014, the fishing of Atlantic tuna in Portugal has been strictly regulated and fishing with trawl nets is prohibited. Compliance with quotas and fishing methods is strictly monitored and additionally documented by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC certificate).
