Feijoa, which is related to the guava, produces fruits with small, 4-8 cm long, 20-50 g heavy, egg-shaped berries. Their solid, leathery, greenish shell is covered on the surface with small, wrinkled outgrowths. Beneath it there is jelly-like, firm (like peach and apricot), whitish to cream-colored flesh with small, soft, yellowish edible seeds that are eaten.
The fruit has a strange, penetrating scent and a delicate, sour-sweet, spicy taste reminiscent of pineapple or gooseberries. It almost tastes a little perfumed. Its vitamin C content is remarkable. Feijoas are usually eaten raw after they have been washed and peeled. Cut them into 2 halves and spoon them out.
