The Rocha pear (Pyrus communis L) is one of the most popular pears here in Portugal. It is a predominantly small pear with a yellow base color in the skin, covered with brown patches and spots. Ideal for eating, it is not too firm, juicy and sweet. It tastes good at room temperature, but also as a refreshing snack from the refrigerator, where it should be stored.
The cultivation of this special pear was first described in Portugal in 1836. Grown north of Lisbon, from Sintra to Leiria, the pear gets its special aroma from the many hours of sunshine and the influence of the nearby Atlantic. This special microclimate produces a unique pear.
