Cloves are the dried buds of the clove tree, native to islands in the Indian Ocean. The intense scent of cloves corresponds to the intense antibacterial effects that cloves have.
The clove tree is the medicinal plant of 2010.

The smell, taste and effect of cloves are determined by the essential oils they contain, which make up up to 15%. They essentially consist of eugenol, eugenol acetate, oleanolic acid and β-caryophyllene.
