Currants are the particularly small dried berries of special types of wine (grape variety: black currants), which are characterized by their dark purple or almost black color.
Currants traditionally have a special place in Christmas baking. But currants are also popular at other times of the year as an ingredient for cakes and yeast pastries. You can also cook with currants - they give a pleasantly bitter-sweet taste to oriental-inspired sauces and ragouts or rice dishes, for example. The fruits are lightly coated with vegetable oil to prevent them from drying out.
