Frankincense (Olibanum) comes from the African frankincense tree ( Boswellia carteri ) in Ethiopia. The valuable resin is extracted by carefully cutting the bark, then gently dried and granulated into the characteristic frankincense peas.
For thousands of years, frankincense has been valued as an incense, medicinal remedy, and in spiritual rituals. The ancient Egyptians already used the aromatic resin as the "sweat of the gods" for purification and disinfection. In ancient times, frankincense was a valuable commodity and played a central role in many religions and cultures—it is even mentioned several times in the Bible.
